French Authorities Crack Down on 18 Year-Old Multicopter Flier

French authorities will decide how to punish the 18-year-old who created this video to celebrate his city.  According to French website estrepublican, Nans Thomas was charged with “endangering the lives of others” for his multicopter flights used to film shots of his city when he compiled into the video below. In a single day his video received 5,000 views on Vimeo. It has now been seen by hundreds of thousands of people.

The popularity of Thomas’ video drew the attention of the Directorate of Civil Aviation, who thought the footage might have been sanctioned by the city’s mayor.

Nancy Vu Du Ciel

“I was curious to see what kid of 18 who has already created two companies and whose images are around the world, offering the most beautiful city advertising campaigns, a campaign at zero cost,” said Mayor of Nancy. “I met a rational and methodical boy. He is surprised by anything that happens to him. He had not imagined the complexity of regulation. One may also wonder about the conditions under which these products were sold: Are the Warnings explicit? I’m not an expert but regulations might require an update.”

Unfortunately for Nans, in 2013 French aviation authorities created new regulations in response to some FPV fliers and enacted the harshest fine environment in Europe. Under these regulations, Nans may face a fine of up to €75,000 and/or one year of imprisonment.

From the video it’s does appear the multirotor was flying near people, which is likely what led to the charges. What do you think? Based on the clip does Nans’ flying seem to be irresponsible or dangerous?
