East Coast Drone Captures Lynchburg Train Derailment Aftermath

by DronerMay 2, 2014

Sam Scott at East Coast Drone captured this footage of a train derailment and the resulting oil and chemical spill into the river adjacent to the tracks. Apparently, estimates are that over 50,000 gallons of crude oil was spilled into the James River and the drone flyover offers a unique perspective of the disaster.

It is clear from the footage that the flight path of the drone didn’t pass over people, but Scott still faced some trouble from law enforcement as well as questions and some criticism from media.

Scott mentions in comments in the YouTube video thread:

“Though I broke no laws or regulations while filming this. Law Enforcement did threaten me while I was “under the goggles” making my job a tad bit more stressful 🙂 Thankfully, I had thought about that being a problem and chose to set up ground station on a roof top. “

Check out the video and let us know in the comments: is this responsible and safe aerial filming?
